Chrysallis

2011

Vestia Rotterdam developed the idea “Kus en Sloop”. Five apartments that need to be renovated were decorated by artist, to become a temporary hotel. We did the interior of one of them. For us it was a opportunity to sketch on actual size, because it had to be done in 10 days.

A chrysalis (Latin chrysallis) or nympha is the pupal stage of butterflies. A caterpillar in his cocoon.

“Chrysallis” is about making a space within a space. Ribbons of cloth link the walls with the ceiling and the floor, like a cocoon. The furniture in the apartment is wrapped into this cocoon.

Cinderella’s Series Armchair

2010

The Cinderella’s series Table and Side Table are a folluw up of the Cinderella’s Chair series, made for my nomination of the Bernadine de Neeveprijs. The Bernadine de Neeveprijs is an award for a young designer for working with glass in a new way.

The armchair of the Cinderella’s series is hold together by an giant bubble where you also lean on with your arm when you sit on it. It lets you look at a different way at the fragility of glass as an material.

The table of the Cinderella’s series has just like the Cinderella’s Chair its own prosthesis of glass. It looks like someone took a bite out of its corner and replaced it by something so fragile, like a prosthesis of glass, that it is hard to imagine that the glass carries the weight of the table.

Anna Ter Haar For Klavers van Engelen

A water bottle of glass with the suggestion if it is squeezed by a hand. The form of the hand is also the handle to lift the bottle. Every bottle is hand blown, with slight differences in the handle and spout. Therefor every water bottle is unique.

The water bottle is made in cooperation with Klavers van Engelen for the new collection of the Nationaal Glasmuseum Leerdam: “By Nationaal Glasmuseum.”

cinderella’s chair

2009

“Cinderella’s Chair” is a follow up of my project “Buitenbeentje”. Prostheses of glass, like a prosthetic leg, custom made for each chair. Glass is a malleable material when heated, so the glass was blown onto the chair, which provides every chair with its own unique prosthesis.

Glass however, is also a very fragile material. It is not often used for purposes of construction. The legs of glass are strong enough to
carry weight though. One can easily sit on the chairs, something you do not expect when you see them.

pour me

2009

“Pour me” is a cooperation with Kristian de Leeuw, a Dutch photographer. Photography is about capturing a moment. “Pour me” is also about capturing a moment of movement, the movement of the paint dripping from the faces, whether human or animal.

The layers of paint cause a deformed effect on the faces and bodies. Two people become one and faces become masks.

buitenbeentje

2007

Graduation project

Buitenbeentje (Dutch for odd man out) is a research on the qualities of poly-urethane resin.

This research is the result of my fascination for everything that differs the normal: the odd man out, the freaks.

Certain appearances that are so ugly and disgusting that they become interesting.

The research is about capturing a moment of movement.
